Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed from small particles of rock and stone or other sediment deposits that have been compacted by water pressure. It is softer and more porous than granite and is composed primarily of the mineral calcite in the form of skeletal fragments from marine organisms such as oysters, clams, mussels, coral, forams and molluscs. Marble is a hard, crystalline, metamorphic rock formed from limestone that has been subjected to the heat and pressure of metamorphism. It is composed primarily of the mineral calcite and usually contains other minerals such as clay minerals, micas, quartz, pyrite, iron oxides and graphite. Quartzite (natural quartz) is a metamorphic rock formed from quartz-rich sandstone that has been exposed to high temperatures and pressures fusing the quartz grains together to form a dense, hard rock.
